SOHO PHOTO GALLERY WILL BE FULL OF KRAP IN MARCH

Tenth Annual National Krappy Kamera® Competition Winners...
15th Annual Members’ Krappy Kamera Exhibition...
Salon de Refusés–Krappy Kollage II – an installation

2008 Grand Prize winner, Susan Lirakis

New York, N.Y. – Once again, the Soho Photo Gallery will be completely dedicated to the art of the “Krappy Kamera” with three separate shows scheduled for March. This unique and eagerly awaited exhibition, which the Gallery has fondly termed the Krappy Kamera® Show, will feature images that have been produced using equipment from the lowest end of the technological scale. The concept underlying this show is that in the hands of an artist, any piece of equipment can be used to create engaging photographs. Cameras generally range from the well-known Diana, Holga and Lubitel to obscure junk-store finds and homemade pinhole jobs.

The March shows will include:

The National Juried Krappy Kamera Competition started in response to the tremendous number of photographers who were interested in the Gallery’s Annual Krappy Kamera Show for its own members. With the Competition now in its tenth year, 181 photographers from 40 states submitted nearly 1,200 images.

This year’s juror is Jill Enfield: artist, teacher and author. Enfield has used historical techniques to enhance her work and is an expert in alternative photographic processes. Enfield’s work is in numerous collections, including the New York, NY Hotel in Las Vegas, La Bibliothèque National in Paris, Bass Art Museum, and RJ Reynolds Inc. Enfield has taught hand-coloring and non-silver techniques at Parsons, The New School, Fashion Institute of Technology, NYU, International Center of Photography, and at workshops in the U.S. and Europe.

Enfield’s book, Photo-Imaging A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes, won the Golden Light Award for Best Technical Book of 2002. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Camera Arts, Nikon World, Shutterbug and Popular Photography. Website: www.jillenfield.com

And the 2008 prize winners are:

Grand Prize: Susan Lirakis–NH
First Place–Michelle Bates, WA
Second Place–Pam Connolly, NY
Third Place– Bill Vaccaro, IL

four honorable mentions go to:
Bob Gervais, OR
Marky Kauffmann, MA
J.E. Piper, NY
Brent Wood, CA

More Krap downstairs . . .

The Fifteenth Annual Members’ Krappy Kamera Exhibition, featuring the work of fifteen Gallery members, will be on display in our front gallery. They’re a small group of Soho Photo’s finest artists who have banded together to prove that the image is made by the photographer—not the camera. Point-and-shoot cameras and disposable cameras are too extravagant for this show—they are too easy to use. Their credo: A Krappy Kamera makes you work, serves as a reminder that the elements that create a photographic image - aperture, shutter speed, focus mechanism and exposure—can be masterfully controlled in trained hands.

And even more Krap upstairs . . . Salon de Refusés–Krappy Kollage II, an installation.

This unique installation is comprised of every non-winning image submitted to the 2008 competition, with nearly 1,200 prints displayed, floor-to-ceiling, collage-style. As was the case last year, our competition coordinators (Sandra Carrion, Sarah Corbin and Jeff Smith) were so impressed by the quality of work print entries that they wanted to share them with the photography community.

Our sponsors furnished all of the prizes associated with the show. They are: Freestyle Photographic of California, Lensbabies, Camera Arts magazine, Light Leaks magazine, and Noted of Brooklyn, NY.

Stop by to see these three remarkable shows on opening night and you will also see many of the Krappy Kameras used to create the extraordinary work and partake in our "Peoples' Choice" award.
