Artist Michael Sanders (London) will present his work as well as the work of recently deceased artist Walt Cotton (Los Angeles) in “Ruin,” a show opening in MiraCosta College’s Kruglak Gallery on March 4. “Ruin” explores the destruction that took place during 2003, when U.S. military forces occupied the ancient site of Babylon for a major camp.

“Using the despoiled archaeology in Babylon as a background theme, our exhibition explores the complex of layers that destroy and create archaeology,” says Sanders. “The destruction that took place was not the responsibility of any one individual or single group, but is the result of misunderstanding and cultural insensitivity. The exhibition seeks to raise awareness of this subject and focuses on the themes of despoiled archaeology, cultural insensitivity and future archaeology.”

Sanders holds a bachelor’s degree with honors from Manchester Polytechnic. His art has been featured in exhibitions in England and the United States. Examples of his work can be found on his web site. Cotton, who taught at San Diego State University, has had his art featured through the United States and in Spain, Canada, Italy and England.

“Ruin” will be on display in the Kruglak Gallery March 4-April 3. (The gallery is closed March 17-20). The gallery is located in the MiraCosta College Student Center on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Dr. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 6-7:30 p.m. Admission is free. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, March 6, 6:30-8:30 pm. and talks with Sanders are slated for Monday, March 10 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
